田中頼璋 Tanaka Raisho (1868-1940) Japanese art kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll / Roaring Fierce Tiger on Cliff RE425

田中頼璋 Tanaka Raisho (1868-1940)
Japanese painter of the Meiji and early Showa periods. Born in Shimane prefecture. Studied under Mori Kansai and Kawabata Gyokusho. He received awards at the Japan Art Association Exhibition, the Teiten Exhibition, and the Bunten Exhibition. His painting style was described as a fusion of literati taste and Maruyama School realism.

with signature 'Raisho' 頼璋

A surge of raw energy runs through this dramatic tiger painting by Tanaka Raishō (1868–1940), where the animal crouches on a rocky ledge with its jaws open and its gaze fixed forward in fierce alertness. Raishō, trained under Mori Kansai and Kawabata Gyokushō, forged a style that blends the literati taste he admired with the realism of the Maruyama tradition. That fusion is unmistakable here: the stripes rendered with sharp precision, the fur lifted by subtle ink gradations, and the rock face shaped with confident, rhythmic strokes. A frequent exhibitor at the Japan Art Association, Teiten, and Bunten, Raishō was known for giving classical subjects a vivid immediacy, and this tiger is no exception. Signed “Raishō” (頼璋), the work shows the painter at his most commanding. Hung in a room, the scroll introduces a bold, protective presence—the kind of image that shifts the atmosphere, adding strength and a sense of alert vitality to the space.
