田能村竹田 Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835)
Nanga painter of the late Edo period, representative of the literati painting circles of the late Edo period. He lived a free literary life while visiting Nagasaki, Osaka, and Kyoto. While studying Chinese poetry from a young age, he also learned painting from a painter from his hometown, and for a time studied under 谷文晁 Tani Buncho (1763-1840) in Edo. He established his own style of painting with delicate brushstrokes, faithful to the style of Nanga (Southern-style painting) and with a high degree of dignity. However, it was the southern painters in Osaka and Kyoto, such as 頼山陽 Rai Sanyo (1780-1832), 岡田米山人 Okada Beisanjin (1744-1820), 浦上玉堂 Uragami Gyokudo (1745-1820), and 青木木米 Aoki Mokubei (1767-1833), who suggested to him the way to become a great literati painter. And he learned a lot from 米山人 Beisanjin in particular. Among his pupils were 高橋草坪 Takahashi Sohei (1804-1835), 帆足杏雨 Hoashi Kyou (1810-1884), and 田能村直入 Tanomura Chokunyu (1814-1907).
with signature 'Chikuden sei' 竹田生 and seal 'Ken in' 憲印 'Chikuden' 竹田
This hanging scroll by Tanomura Chikuden (1777–1835) presents a refined depiction of lotus and pomegranate, rendered with delicate brushwork and the quiet poetic sensibility characteristic of his mature Nanga style. Signed “Chikuden sei” (竹田生) and sealed “Ken in” (憲印) and “Chikuden” (竹田), the work reflects his lifelong engagement with Chinese poetry, literati ideals, and the disciplined elegance he developed through study with Tani Buncho and close exchange with Kyoto–Osaka literati such as Rai Sanyo and Okada Beisanjin. The combination of lotus—symbol of purity—and pomegranate—associated with abundance and vitality—creates a composition rich in classical symbolism and literati nuance. The scroll is accompanied by an appraisal box by Kai Kozan (1867–1961), a prominent scholar and connoisseur of Nanga painting whose research and attributions played a major role in preserving the legacy of Edo-period literati masters. Kozan’s appraisal underscores both the historical importance of Chikuden’s work and the continuity of appreciation that links Edo literati culture with modern scholarship.
