Confucianist, calligrapher, and painter of the late Edo period. Also known as 菘翁 (Suou). One of the "Great Three Calligraphers of the Late Edo Period". He learned calligraphy from 西宣行 Nishi Nobuyuki (1750-1812) and painting from 矢野典博 Yano Norihiro of the Kano school. Later he studied under 鉄翁祖門 Tetsuo Somon in Nagasaki. He went to Koyasan (Mt. Koya) and was fascinated by Kukai's calligraphy, and thereafter traveled to various places to study calligraphy and painting.

with signature 'Suou’ 菘翁 and seal 'Kunmo' 君茂

This hanging scroll by Nukina Kaioku (貫名海屋, 1778–1863)—also known by his art name Suō (菘翁)—features a serene Sansui (山水) landscape with a wise man fishing, paired with a single line of expressive calligraphy. The composition reflects Kaioku’s synthesis of Confucian thought, literati aesthetics, and classical brushwork, combining poetic solitude with visual clarity. A leading figure of the late Edo period, Kaioku was celebrated as one of the “Three Great Calligraphers” of his time. He studied calligraphy under Nishi Nobuyuki (西宣行) and painting with Yano Norihiro (矢野典博) of the Kano school, later deepening his practice under Tetsuo Somon (鉄翁祖門) in Nagasaki. His travels to Mt. Koya, where he encountered the calligraphy of Kūkai, profoundly shaped his artistic philosophy. Signed “Suō” (菘翁) and sealed “Kunmo” (君茂), this scroll embodies the quiet wisdom and refined brushwork of Kaioku’s mature style, offering a contemplative fusion of nature, scholarship, and Zen-inflected introspection.
