A painter of the Unkoku school who was active in the middle of the Edo period. He used to call himself 等澄 Tocho, but later changed his name to 等微 Tocho.

The light seems to gather along the arc of the full moon and trace its way down the white plum branch, allowing the blossoms and bamboo to emerge with a quiet clarity that reflects the restrained elegance associated with the Unkoku school; this sense of poised illumination aligns with the work of Unkoku Tocho (active 1700–1780), a mid‑Edo painter who first signed himself Tocho with the character for “clear” before later adopting the form meaning “subtle,” and whose brushwork often balanced firmness with delicacy, while this scroll bears the signature ‘Unkokuan Hokkyo Tocho’ together with the seals ‘Unkoku,’ ‘Hokkyo,’ and ‘Tocho,’ and is accompanied by its box, allowing the composition’s interplay of moonlight and seasonal branches to settle into a calm, enduring presence.
