This hanging scroll features the powerful Zen phrase “Byojoshin Koredo” (平常心是道)—“Ordinary mind is the Way”—rendered in bold calligraphy by Suga Gendō (b. 1919), a respected figure associated with Daitoku-ji, one of Kyoto’s most prominent Zen temples. The phrase, drawn from classical Chan/Zen teachings, expresses the idea that enlightenment is found not in extremes, but in the calm clarity of everyday awareness. The brushwork is expressive and confident, with dynamic strokes that reflect both spiritual depth and artistic mastery. The scroll is mounted in traditional textile borders and comes with its original wooden box (tomobako) bearing the artist’s inscription and seal.
