尾形光琳 Ogata Korin (1658-1716)
Painter and craftsman of the mid-Edo period. 尾形乾山 Ogata Kenzan (1663-1743) is his younger brother. He is one of the most famous painters of the mid-Edo period. He first learned painting techniques from the Kano school, but was eventually exposed to the essence of the works of 俵屋宗達 Tawaraya Sotatsu (1570-1643) and the Sotatsu school, and developed his own unique style of painting under the great influence. He developed his own style of Yamato-e painting, which could be described as the Korin pattern with decorative elements. It was later called the Rinpa school. His paintings can be said to be a new development of the rich decorative qualities of Sotatsu's paintings, with a superb sense of form and a keen eye for nature. In addition to his paintings, he devised maki-e designs under the influence of Koetsu maki-e, and left behind outstanding works in maki-e as well. Although he was licentious and irresponsible, he never forgot his pride as an aristocratic, highbrow, and urban artist.
