平野五岳 Hirano Gogaku (1811-1893) Japanese antique art kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll / Village Landscape Sansui RB409

平野五岳 Hirano Gogaku (1811-1893)
Buddhist monk and painter of the late Edo and Meiji periods. The chief priest of Sennen-ji temple of the Otani sect of Shin Buddhism in Bungo (Oita Prefecture). He studied poetry and literature under 広瀬淡窓 Hirose Tansou (1782-1856) and later created literati paintings under the influence of 田能村竹田 Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835). He also visited Kyoto frequently and made friends with many painters, including 貫名海屋 Nukina Kaioku (1778-1863) and 前田暢堂 Maeda Chodo (1817-1878), and gradually deepened his painting skills while changing his style several times. He was also an excellent calligrapher and was called "三絶僧 Sanzetsuso / A great monk whose three excellent skills" for his excellence in all three fields of poetry, calligraphy, and painting.
