山岡鉄舟 Yamaoka Tesshu (1836-1888) Japanese antique art kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll / 聡明叡知 守之以愚 Two Lines Calligraphy RC665

聡明叡知 守之以愚
The more intelligent and perceptive a person is, the more they deliberately navigate the world with a certain stubbornness.

山岡鉄舟 Yamaoka Tesshu (1836-1888)
A famous samurai of the Bakumatsu period, who played an important role in the Meiji Restoration. The founder of the Itto Shoden Muto-ryu school of swordsmanship. Brother-in-law of Takahashi Deishu. Together with Katsu Kaishu and Takahashi Deishu, he is known as one of the Three Shu (Sanshu) of the Bakumatsu Period. During the Boshin War, he met Saigo Takamori as an emissary of Katsu Kaishu and paved the way for the opening of Edo Castle. He mastered the three arts of swordsmanship, Zen, and calligraphy. It is said that he wrote a million sheets of calligraphy during his lifetime because he never refused to write if people asked him to.

with signature 'Tesshu' 鉄舟 and seal 'Yamaoka Takayuki' 山岡高歩 'Tesshu' 鉄舟

What gives this calligraphic hanging scroll its quiet authority is not only the strength of the brush but the depth of thought embedded in it, presenting the phrase “Sōmei Eichi, Mamoru ni Oite Gu o Motte Su” by Yamaoka Tesshū (1836–1888), a pivotal samurai-intellectual whose life unified Zen practice, swordsmanship, and calligraphy. The text conveys the idea that true intelligence and insight are preserved through humility and an outwardly unassuming attitude, a concept closely aligned with Tesshū’s own disciplined worldview. Powerful, confident strokes are balanced by areas of restraint, creating a composed rhythm that reflects inner stillness rather than ornamentation. A small paper label affixed to the reverse of the scroll records that the mounting was carried out in June of Taishō 15 (1926), providing a concrete historical reference to its presentation at that time.
