田能村竹田 Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835)
Nanga painter of the late Edo period, representative of the literati painting circles of the late Edo period. He lived a free literary life while visiting Nagasaki, Osaka, and Kyoto. While studying Chinese poetry from a young age, he also learned painting from a painter from his hometown, and for a time studied under 谷文晁 Tani Buncho (1763-1840) in Edo. He established his own style of painting with delicate brushstrokes, faithful to the style of Nanga (Southern-style painting) and with a high degree of dignity. However, it was the southern painters in Osaka and Kyoto, such as 頼山陽 Rai Sanyo (1780-1832), 岡田米山人 Okada Beisanjin (1744-1820), 浦上玉堂 Uragami Gyokudo (1745-1820), and 青木木米 Aoki Mokubei (1767-1833), who suggested to him the way to become a great literati painter. And he learned a lot from 米山人 Beisanjin in particular. Among his pupils were 高橋草坪 Takahashi Sohei (1804-1835), 帆足杏雨 Hoashi Kyou (1810-1884), and 田能村直入 Tanomura Chokunyu (1814-1907).
