This hanging scroll depicts a dramatic rising dragon emerging through swirling clouds, a powerful image long associated in East Asian tradition with strength, vitality, and auspicious transformation. Rendered on silk with controlled yet expressive brushwork, the dragon’s sinuous form moves upward through layers of mist, creating a strong sense of vertical momentum and tension, while subtle gradations of ink and tone give depth to both the clouds and the turbulent waves below. Selective touches of color accent the dragon’s eyes and claws, drawing the viewer’s focus without overwhelming the restrained monochrome palette. The composition balances dynamism and elegance, allowing the mythical creature to appear both commanding and refined. The work is signed and sealed “Wako” and attributed to Kasai Wako (born 1917), a Japanese painter recognized for his participation in major national exhibitions. The scroll is traditionally mounted, fitted with blue-and-white ceramic roller ends, and is accompanied by its original tomobako, reflecting careful preservation. Together, the expressive imagery, fine silk surface, and refined mounting make this an impressive example of a classical dragon theme presented with modern sensitivity and dignified presence.
