Brimming with seasonal richness, this paired set of hanging scrolls by Karashima Nishiro (active late Edo period) presents red and white peonies rendered with a confident, naturalistic touch. Each bloom is shaped with layered brushwork that captures both delicacy and fullness, while the surrounding foliage provides a rhythmic balance that enhances the flowers’ presence. The painter’s inscription, “Nishiro Karashima Heigi,” together with the seals “Togi no in” and “Nishiro,” situates the work firmly within the refined botanical tradition of the late Edo era. Dated 1854 (Kaei kōin), the pair carries the quiet elegance associated with classical floral subjects, yet retains a sense of vitality through its vivid color harmonies.
