宮本武蔵 Miyamoto Musashi (1584-1645)Swordsman, philosopher, military strategist, and artist of the early Edo period. Founder of the Niten Ichiryu school of military arts, which used two swords. He is famous for his duel with Sasaki Kojiro at Ganryujima Island. It is said that he never lost any of his 60 or so duels during his lifetime. He also showed extraordinary talent in ink painting and calligraphy.
