一華開五葉 Ikkagoyo wo Hiraku
一華 means single flower, 開 means open, 五葉 means five petals. A Zen word derived from Bodhidharma Daishi's ``Ikkagoyo wo hiraki, kekka jinen ni naru'' Just as a flower withstands a harsh environment and opens its five petals when the time comes, it is a teaching that if you do your best to do what you need to do now, the best results will come naturally.

Born in Hiroshima Prefecture. He is the 14th abbot of Tofukuji Temple of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism.

The calligraphy Ikkagoyō wo Hiraku is written with broad, steady strokes by Okada Kido (1902–1988), the 14th abbot of Tōfuku‑ji of the Rinzai school; expressing the Zen teaching that a single flower opening its five petals symbolizes how sincere effort in the present naturally leads to its proper result, the work bears the signature “Kido so” along with the seals “Kobusshin,” “Boroan,” and “Kido,” forming a composed presentation within the tradition of Zen calligraphy.
