中村直人 Nakamura Naondo (1905-1981)
Sculptor and Western-style painter of the Taisho and Showa periods. Born 1905 in Ueda, Nagano, Japan, he moved to Tokyo in 1920 and was introduced by Yamamoto Kanae 山本鼎 (1882-1946) to the Mokushinsha, organized by Yoshida Hakurei, a member of the sculpture department of the re-established Japan Art Institute. He received instruction in drawing from Kosugi Houan and Kimura Shohachi, which laid the foundations for his later work. His work is characterized by the strong chisel carving marks, precise depictions of birds, and rock and driftwood-like pedestals, and in 1926, at the age of 21, Naoto won his first prize at the Japan Art Institute (Inten), one of the most prestigious art organizations in Japan. The following year, he was awarded the Japan Art Institute Prize and began to distinguish himself in the world of Japanese sculpture. In 1935, he was promoted to Dōjin, the highest rank within the Inten, and rose to become one of Japan's leading sculptors. Encouraged by his close friend Fujita Tsuguharu, he moved his family to Paris in 1952. His first solo exhibition in Paris was a great success and was highly praised by the leading local newspapers. Nakamura Naondo said, “I don't need awards and medals, only my work.
