Description
Heavy Bronze Buddhist Temple Bell Hanging Bell 'Bonsho' 43cm 12kg VA904
A substantial Japanese bronze temple bell (bonshō) from the Meiji to early Shōwa period (circa 1900–1930), measuring 43 cm in height and weighing approximately 11.75 kg. The bell features a classic rounded form with flared base and raised knobs (chi) arranged in symmetrical rows. The uppermost ring-shaped section, known as the dragon’s head (ryūzu), is sculpted with two beast heads meeting at the lip—an iconic motif in Buddhist ritual bells. Engraved on the surface is the inscription: “Donated by Utsumi Tarō”, indicating its ceremonial or commemorative origin. The reddish areas visible on the surface are not material changes, but rather marks and discoloration accumulated through long-term storage and use, contributing to the bell’s authentic aged character. Its dignified presence and impressive weight make it a striking display piece as well as a culturally significant artifact.
