A butsudan is an altar where the principal image, the center of Buddhism, is enshrined for worship and memorial services. At the center of the altar is the principal image of the religious faith. In a broad sense, the entire space set aside for worship can be called a butsudan. A home butsudan is a smaller version of the butsudan found in temples, integrated with the kitchen and box-shaped. Therefore, a butsudan is like a temple in the house.
