Born in Kagoshima Prefecture in 1898. Studied under Yamauchi Tamon. After Yamauchi's death, entered Kawai Gyokudō's Choryu-gajuku painting school. Later joined Kodama Kibō's Boshin-kai and formed the Sankō-kai. Selected for the Imperial Art Exhibition and the Bunten.

with signature and seal 'Iwao' 巌

Quiet and expansive, this hanging scroll by Yamashita Iwao (1898–1977) captures an autumn view of Mount Fuji where the season’s clarity settles gently over pines and silver grass. The mountain rises in calm, snow‑touched stillness, while the tall trees in the foreground anchor the scene with a grounded, almost meditative presence. Iwao—born in Kagoshima and trained under Yamauchi Tamon before entering Kawai Gyokudō’s Chōryū‑gajuku—absorbed both the lyrical naturalism of his teachers and the disciplined structure of the Bunten and Imperial Art Exhibition circles. That blend appears here in the way the composition breathes: the grasses sway lightly, the sky opens in soft gradations, and Fuji stands serene at the center, neither dramatic nor distant but quietly resonant. Signed and sealed “Iwao”, the work reflects his mature command of landscape painting shaped by decades of study and artistic community. Accompanied by its original box (Tomobako), the scroll has been carefully preserved. Displayed within an interior, it brings a gentle, dignified atmosphere—its interplay of autumn light, pine, and the enduring form of Fuji offering a moment of calm that deepens with each viewing.
