藤井松山 Fujii Shozan (1880-1967)
Japanese painter of the Meiji and Showa periods. Studied under 藤井松林 Fujii Shorin (1825-1894) in the Maruyama School and 鈴木松年 Suzuki Shonen (1848-1918) in Kyoto. In 1934, he returned to his hometown in Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture. He specialized in paintings of flowers and birds, Sansui landscapes, and figures.
with signature 'Shozan sha' 松山寫 and seal 'Hiromoto' 廣基 'Shozan' 松山
Carried by soft washes of colour and drifting autumn mist, this hanging scroll by Fujii Shozan (1880–1967) unfolds with a gentle sense of movement as mountains rise in layered silhouettes and a small raft glides quietly along the river below. Shozan—trained in Kyoto under Fujii Shorin of the Maruyama school and later under Suzuki Shonen—brings together the clarity of academic brushwork and the lyrical warmth of regional landscape traditions. Subtle reds in the foliage, the muted browns of distant peaks, and the pale atmosphere settling over the valley create a rhythm that feels both seasonal and contemplative. The composition draws the viewer inward, guiding the eye from the rugged slopes to the calm waterway where the rafters appear as part of the natural flow. Signed “Shozan sha” with the seals “Hiromoto” and “Shozan”, the work reflects the painter’s mature command of sansui expression, shaped by a career that spanned the Meiji and Shōwa eras and later returned to his native Fukuyama. Accompanied by its box, the scroll has been carefully preserved. Displayed in an interior, it brings a quiet, expansive atmosphere—its drifting river and autumn mountains offering a moment of calm that unfolds gradually with each viewing.
