山田無文 Yamada Mumon (1900-1988)
Yamada Mumon was a Rinzai school roshi, calligrapher, and former abbot of Shofuku-ji in Kobe, Japan. Mumon was also the former head of the Myoshin-ji branch of the Rinzai school of Japan. His most prominent student (and Dharma heir) is Harada Shodo of Sogen-ji, an influential master in both Japan and the United States.

The slightly fibrous texture of the paper seems to steady the bold strokes of Konnichi Buji, giving the characters a grounded physicality that complements the phrase’s teaching of appreciating an undisturbed, ordinary day and recognizing one’s own Buddha‑nature without outward seeking; this direct yet unforced presence aligns with the work of Yamada Mumon (1900–1988), the Rinzai roshi, calligrapher, former abbot of Shofuku‑ji, and later head of the Myoshin‑ji branch, whose influence extended through students such as Harada Shodo, while the scroll bears the seals ‘Taishitsu doja’ and ‘Gagasanjin,’ and the piece is accompanied by its original box (Tomobako), allowing the calm clarity of the phrase to settle into a quiet, enduring presence.
