西垣宗興 Nishigaki Soko (1908-1985) Daitoku-ji Japanese Zen kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll / 松樹千年翠 Shoju Sennenno Midori with Original Box (Tomobako) RA778

松樹千年翠 Shoju Sennenno Midori
松 means pine tree 樹 means leaves 千年 means thousand years 翠 means green.
In short, unlike colorful flowers, pine trees are hard to spot but pine tree endures things like hard rain, hard wind for many years and always keep green. This is buddhist Zen word, in other words, it tells us not to lose essential things.

西垣宗興 Nishigaki Soko (1908-1985)
Received ordination as Nanzan, abbot of Shinjuan, Daitokuji Temple. Served as a member of the Daitokuji sect's religious council and director of the legal affairs department, etc.

with signature 'Zen Daitoku Soko' 前大徳宗興 and seal 'Murasakino daitoku' 紫野大徳 'Soko' 宗興
