西国三十三所 Saigoku sanjūsanjo (33 pilgrimage places in the West) - Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage 雲上聖観音 Unjoshokannon (Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva standing on a cloud) with Original Box (Tomobako) / Japanese Buddhism art kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll RD894

The Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage (Saigoku Sanjusan-sho) is a pilgrimage of thirty-three Buddhist temples throughout the Kansai region of Japan, similar to the Shikoku Pilgrimage

Shokannon:
Also known as Kannon Bosatsu (Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara), this name was given to the deity because it means that he is always watching people and will save them in the blink of an eye at the sound of a call for help, and was widely worshipped in Japan. It is one of the Six Avalokitesvara Bodhisattvas and is said to save people who are lost on the road to hell.

A meaningful Japanese hanging scroll commemorating the Saigoku Sanjūsankasho pilgrimage, which includes 33 temples dedicated to Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. This nōkyōjiku (納経軸) features inscriptions and seals from each temple, collected during the pilgrimage and arranged around a central image—often representing Kannon or a symbolic figure. The scroll documents a completed spiritual journey, with each temple’s calligraphy and stamp reflecting devotion and cultural heritage. The included wooden box bears a date of Showa 41 (1966), marking the year of completion and mounting. In Japanese tradition, the Saigoku pilgrimage is a revered act of merit, often undertaken for healing, protection, or ancestral honor. This scroll serves as both a devotional artifact and a historical record of faith.
