佐々木麗峰 Sasaki Reiho Japanese tea ceremony utensil / Cherry Blossoms Makie Translucent Lacquer Finish Natsume Tea Caddy with Original Box (Tomobako) VB195

佐々木麗峰 Sasaki Reiho
A lacquer artist and maki-e artist based in Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture. He has been creating natsume and kōgō since around 1968, and his accolades include the Lacquer Art Association Award and prizes at the Nihon Geijutsu Exhibition. He has produced numerous medium-sized natsume featuring delicate maki-e designs of cherry blossoms, chrysanthemums, willows and bamboo.

白檀塗り Byakudan Nuri
A lacquer art technique in which layers of transparent lacquer are applied over gold leaf, silver leaf or silver maki-e to create a deep, amber-coloured lustre. It is characterised by the fact that, as the lacquer ages, it becomes more translucent, causing the colours to become more vivid and take on a rich, mature hue.

A soft depth emerges from the translucent surface of this natsume, where Sasaki Reiho’s byakudan‑nuri creates an amber glow that shifts gently as the light moves across it. The cherry blossoms, drawn in delicate maki‑e, seem to settle into the lacquer rather than sit on top of it, a quality that reflects Reiho’s long career in Fukui and his ability to balance clarity with restraint. The rounded form has a calm presence, its proportions giving it a steady rhythm in the hand, while the maturing translucency of the finish hints at the richer tones that will appear as the years pass. Crafted in wood and accompanied by its original tomobako, the piece carries the quiet refinement associated with tea‑ceremony utensils, offering both visual warmth and the sense of a work shaped by decades of practiced technique.
