This hanging scroll features the Zen phrase “Chisoku” (知足)—“Knowing sufficiency”—expressed in bold calligraphy by Yokoi Myodo, a respected Zen master affiliated with Daitoku-ji, one of Kyoto’s most prominent Zen temples. The concept of chisoku reflects a core tenet of Zen philosophy: that true contentment arises not from desire, but from recognizing and appreciating what one already has. Rendered with confident brushwork and spiritual clarity, the character embodies both aesthetic strength and contemplative depth.
