竹 means bamboo 有 means to there is 上下 means up and down 節 means joint. In short, even though there is an up and down joint part on bamboo, there are no ranks on them. That applies to human beings. Respecting our difference from each other, harmony will be maintained.
藤井誡堂 Fujii Kaido (1898-1984)
Daitokuji Temple 515th abbot and the 22nd abbot of the Daitoku Hoshunin Temple. He has been involved in the restoration of Daitokuji Temple since the end of World War II, along with Zuigan, Unso, and others. He had a deep knowledge of tea ceremony ceramics, especially tea bowls and tea scoops, and taught Kyoto pottery potters, and contributed to the restoration of Murasino-yaki ceramics of the Edo period. He produced many of his own tea bowls, tea scoops, and tea scrolls, and was one of the most popular tea masters of Daitokuji Temple.
