上村松園 Uemura Shoen (1875-1949)
She excelled at painting beautiful women with elegance. In 1948, she became the first woman to be awarded the Order of Cultural Merit, and in 1890, she exhibited her painting "Four Seasonal Beauties" at the 3rd National Industrial Exhibition and received a first-class medal. The painting was purchased by Prince Arthur, the third son of Queen Victoria, during his visit to Japan, and the story became a hot topic.

This elegant Japanese hanging scroll features a reproduction silkscreen print of “Harunobu”, a celebrated bijin-ga (beautiful woman painting) by Uemura Shoen (1875–1949), one of Japan’s most revered female painters. The artwork depicts a graceful woman in a vibrant kimono, holding a branch of cherry blossoms, symbolizing seasonal beauty, femininity, and poetic elegance. Shoen’s bijin-ga are known for their refined dignity, subtle emotion, and timeless grace, often portraying women not merely as decorative figures but as embodiments of inner strength and serenity. The title “Harunobu” may reference Suzuki Harunobu, the Edo-period ukiyo-e master, suggesting a homage to classical aesthetics. This silkscreen edition was published in 1996 by Uemura Atsushi, Shoen’s son and a respected Nihonga artist, in a limited run of 380 prints, of which this is No. 115. The scroll is housed in its original wooden box, confirming provenance and care. Ideal for collectors of Japanese bijin-ga, modern Nihonga reproductions, or feminine seasonal art, this piece offers both visual refinement and cultural resonance.
