谷口藹山 Taniguchi Aizan (1816-1899)
Japanese literati painter of the late Edo and Meiji periods. Specialised in landscape and flower-and-bird paintings. Born as the second son of Toemon, a farmer in Hokonokimura, Echigo-China (Tateyama, Toyama). He loved painting from an early age and learnt painting from the literati painter Mizukami Gembuchi in his home town. At the age of 18, he moved to Edo and was introduced by Sakai Ukon to Tani Buncho's Shazanro. He made the acquaintance of Yangkawa Seigan and, on his recommendation, entered Takaku Aigai's Banseido in 1837. He studied literati painting in earnest. He was favoured by his teacher Haeoae, who gave him the title of Aizan. Afterwards, he interacted with various writers, poets and painters to improve his painting skills. He was respected as an elder of the Kyoto art world. He died at the age of 84.
