處士風流水石間
It is a term denoting a noble way of life, free from the constraints of worldly values such as official rank, wealth, or public reputation, living in tranquil harmony with pure nature, with a calm mind and self-reliance.

山岡鉄舟 Yamaoka Tesshu (1836-1888)
A famous samurai of the Bakumatsu period, who played an important role in the Meiji Restoration. The founder of the Itto Shoden Muto-ryu school of swordsmanship. Brother-in-law of Takahashi Deishu. Together with Katsu Kaishu and Takahashi Deishu, he is known as one of the Three Shu (Sanshu) of the Bakumatsu Period. During the Boshin War, he met Saigo Takamori as an emissary of Katsu Kaishu and paved the way for the opening of Edo Castle. He mastered the three arts of swordsmanship, Zen, and calligraphy. It is said that he wrote a million sheets of calligraphy during his lifetime because he never refused to write if people asked him to.

with signature 'Tesshu' 鉄舟 and seal 'Tesshu koji' 鉄舟居士 'Yamaoka Takayuki' 山岡高歩

Expressed in a single, forceful sweep of Zen‑infused brushwork, this kakejiku by Yamaoka Tesshū (1836–1888) presents the phrase “處士風流水石間”, a classical ideal describing a noble life lived beyond worldly rank or reputation, in quiet harmony with nature and with an unshakable, self‑reliant mind. Tesshū—renowned samurai of the Bakumatsu period, master of swordsmanship, Zen, and calligraphy, and one of the celebrated “Three Shu” alongside Katsu Kaishū and Takahashi Deishū—was known for producing vast numbers of calligraphic works, each executed with uncompromising spirit and immediacy. This scroll bears his signature “Tesshū” (鉄舟) and the seals “Tesshū koji” (鉄舟居士) and “Yamaoka Takayuki” (山岡高歩), affirming its connection to his distinctive, vigorous style. The piece is accompanied by a preservation box, consistent with traditional storage practices for Tesshū’s calligraphy.
