This scroll comes with an appraised box by Okumura Sekiran 奥村石蘭 (1834-1895) and appraised in the back of the mounting by Oda Kyosai 織田杏斎 (1845-1912).

山本梅逸 Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783-1856)
Nanga artist of the late Edo period. Born in Nagoya to a family of engravers. He first studied painting under 山田宮常 Yamada Kyujo (1747-1794), 張月樵 Cho Gessho (1765-1832). He and 中林竹洞 Nakabayashi Chikuto (1776-1853) studied painting under 神谷天遊 Kamiya Tenyu. He went to Kyoto to hone his painting skills. He excelled in flower-and-bird painting and Sansui landscape painting. His flower-and-bird paintings were especially well-received for the elegance and splendor of his coloring. In his later years, he returned to his hometown and became a painter in the Nagoya domain.

奥村石蘭 Okumura Sekiran (1834-1895)
Japanese painter of the late Edo and Meiji periods, born in Nagoya, Owari in 1834. Studied painting of the Shijo school under Nomura Gyokkei, and in 1855 went to Kyoto to study under Yokoyama Seiki. He later returned to Nagoya and trained many students. In addition to painting, he was also skilled in seal engraving, calligraphy, and haiku.

織田杏斎 Oda Kyosai (1845-1912)
Oda Kyosai was a Nagoya painter of the Meiji era. His name was Kei-啓, his characters were Shido-子道, and his other name was Ryokutenkan-緑天館. He was born in 1845 in Shimo-chaya-cho, Nagoya, Owari Province, the eldest son of painter Oda Kyosho-織田共樵. He studied under Chō Shinsai-張晋斎 in 1862 and died on 24 November 1912.
