中林竹洞 Nakabayashi Chikuto (1776-1853)
Nanga artist of the late Edo period. Known as a theoretical leader of literati painting at the end of the Edo period and as a nobleman. Born into a family of doctors in Nagoya, he studied painting under 山田宮常 Yamada Kyujo (1747-1794) at first. The fellow-pupil was 山本梅逸 Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783-1856). At the age of 27, he moved to Kyoto with Baiitsu and opened his own studio as a painter, while also studying Confucian and Japanese studies. He was a theoretician and author of many works. He excelled in Sansui landscapes, flowers, and birds, and his landscapes in particular are elegant and tranquil. His son 中林竹渓 Nakabayashi Chikkei (1816-1867) is also famous as a painter.
with signature 'Chikuto sanjin' 竹洞山人 and seal 'Chikuto' 竹洞
Evoking the quiet refinement of late‑Edo literati painting, this hanging scroll by Nakabayashi Chikuto (1776–1853) presents an elegant autumn landscape where layered mountains, drifting mist, and cascading waterfalls unfold with measured clarity. Two pines anchor the foreground beside a rocky path, their twisting forms rendered with the disciplined brushwork that defined Chikuto’s mature style. The distant peaks soften into atmospheric washes, creating a sense of depth and poetic stillness characteristic of Nanga ideals. Chikuto’s inscription “Chikuto sanjin” and seal “Chikuto” affirm the work’s authenticity and connect it to the intellectual lineage he shaped as one of the leading theorists of literati painting in the late Edo period. The composition balances structure and spontaneity, offering a landscape that feels both contemplative and quietly expansive. Within a collection or interior, the scroll introduces a serene, scholarly presence—its restrained beauty adding cultural depth and a gentle, meditative atmosphere to the surrounding space.
