今尾景年 Imao Keinen (1845-1924)
Painter of the Shijo School in the Meiji-Taisho period. He first studied ukiyoe, but later studied under Suzuki Hyakunen. He was highly regarded in the Kyoto art world in the early Meiji period along with Suzuki Shonen and Kubota Beisen. His exquisite and realistic flower-and-bird paintings were highly acclaimed overseas. He received awards at the World Expositions in Chicago and Paris.

The composition leads the eye upward from the rugged cliff and solitary pine toward the rising sun, creating a clear vertical movement that reflects Imao Keinen’s ability to balance strength of form with atmospheric restraint, a quality that distinguished his work within the Shijo school during the Meiji and Taisho periods; Keinen (1845–1924), who first studied ukiyo‑e before training under Suzuki Hyakunen, became highly regarded in Kyoto alongside Suzuki Shonen and Kubota Beisen, and his flower‑and‑bird paintings later received international recognition at the Chicago and Paris expositions, while this scroll bears the signature and seal ‘Keinen’ and is accompanied by its original double box (Tomobako), allowing the interplay of ascending light and steadfast pine to settle into a calm, enduring presence.
