山 means mountain, 呼 means to call, 萬歳 means hooray, 聲 means voice. In short, if you shout loudly in the mountain, you can hear the echo. This is Zen words, if you have a good feeling about something, it will spread like an echo.
前田昌道 Maeda Shodo (b1939), Former chief priest of Zuibuinin, the pagoda of Daitoku-ji Temple.
with signature 'Murasakino Zuiho Shodo' 紫野瑞峯昌道 and seal 'Murasakino' 紫野 'Shodo'昌道
This kakejiku features the Zen phrase “Yamawayobu Banzei no Koe”, a teaching that likens the echo of a shout in the mountains to the way a good intention or uplifting feeling naturally spreads outward. The bold, expansive brushwork carries a sense of open air and resonance, as if the characters themselves were shaped by the movement of sound returning from a distant peak. The phrase encourages clarity of mind and the recognition that one’s inner state radiates into the world. Maeda Shōdō (b.1939), former chief priest of Zuibuinin of the Daitoku‑ji school, is known for calligraphy that balances strength with a calm, grounded presence, and that sensibility is evident in the confident rhythm of each stroke. The work bears the signature “Murasakino Zuihō Shōdō” and the seals “Murasakino” and “Shōdō”, affirming the authenticity of the piece. Accompanied by its original box (Tomobako), the scroll is well preserved and ready for long‑term appreciation. When displayed, it brings a clear, invigorating atmosphere to the room, the meaning of the phrase settling in like an echo that continues to expand gently outward.
