The ink landscape holds a faint moisture in the air around the cliffs and the thin willow branches near the water’s edge, giving the scene a soft depth that contrasts with the firmer strokes forming the fisherman and his small boat; this balance between misted distance and clear foreground suits Koto’s mid‑Shōwa handling, where the brush remains controlled but never rigid, and the scroll bears the signature ‘Koto’ with the seal ‘Motoshige,’ while the piece is accompanied by its box, and as the eye returns to the painting over time the gentle humidity of the scene tends to settle into the surroundings, the quiet shift between pale mountains and the single figure on the river becoming a steady, unobtrusive point of calm.
