Bathed in the glow of a rising sun, this hanging scroll by Furuya Icchō (1890–1966) presents an idealized vision of Mount Hōrai—known in Chinese lore as Mount Penglai—where cranes, ancient pines, and mist‑laden peaks symbolize immortality and eternal youth. The composition unfolds with quiet grandeur: cranes glide through drifting clouds, the red sun emerges over layered mountains, and a solitary pine anchors the foreground with its enduring strength. Icchō’s training in the Maruyama‑Shijō school appears in the naturalistic brushwork and soft modulation of ink tones, while the subtle color accents lend the scene a luminous, almost spiritual clarity. Signed with his “Icchō” seal, the work reflects the painter’s mature command of atmospheric landscape and classical symbolism. Accompanied by its original double box (Tomobako), the scroll carries strong provenance and careful preservation. Within a collection or interior, it introduces a serene, auspicious presence—its imagery of cranes, pines, and the eternal mountain adding cultural depth and a sense of timeless renewal to the surrounding space.
