奥原晴湖 Okuhara Seiko (1837-1913) Japanese antique art kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll / Sailing Boat and Hermitage Landscape Sansui RA568
A female nanga artist of the Meiji era. At first, she studied painting under 牧田水石 Hirata Suiseki (1796-1869), later studied Ming and Qing painting in Edo, and became a private admirer of Zheng Banqiao (Zheng Xie). She painted with a manly and vigorous style, and her popularity was split in two with 安田老山 Yasuda Rozan (1830-1883) at the time of the popularity of literati painting in the early Meiji period. She was a woman of many anecdotes about her masculine appearance and personality, including her decision to cut her hair, which was unusual at the time.
