奥原晴湖 Okuhara Seiko (1837-1913)
A female nanga artist of the Meiji era. At first, she studied painting under 牧田水石 Hirata Suiseki (1796-1869), later studied Ming and Qing painting in Edo, and became a private admirer of Zheng Banqiao (Zheng Xie). She painted with a manly and vigorous style, and her popularity was split in two with 安田老山 Yasuda Rozan (1830-1883) at the time of the popularity of literati painting in the early Meiji period. She was a woman of many anecdotes about her masculine appearance and personality, including her decision to cut her hair, which was unusual at the time.

The interplay between the firm vertical stalks and the softer, sweeping leaves creates a dynamic balance, while the shoots at the base introduce a sense of renewal and seasonal vitality. The artist’s confident ink handling—ranging from dry, textured strokes to fluid, calligraphic lines—gives the composition both structure and spontaneity, reflecting the literati spirit for which bamboo painting is celebrated. The scroll bears the signature “Tōkai Seiko” (東海晴湖) and the seal “Shusekisei Uni Kayogetsu” (種石生 雲移 華葉月), affirming its connection to the painter’s distinctive, vigorous style.
