小室翠雲 Komuro Suiun (1874-1945)
A painter of Southern School art born in Gunma Prefecture. He studied painting under Tazaki Sōun. After Sōun's death, he moved to Tokyo and exhibited at the Southern Song Painting Society and the Japan Art Association, where his talent was recognized. In 1907, upon the establishment of the Bunten exhibition, he formed the Seiha Dōshikai to oppose the Bunten's new school. In 1921, he founded the Japan Southern School Painting Institute with Yano Kyoson and others.

This large Japanese hanging scroll by Komuro Suiun (1874–1945), signed Suiun (翠雲), features a majestic pair of peafowl perched on rocky outcrops amid blooming flora. The upper bird stands tall with its beak open, while the lower one nestles among vibrant peonies and bamboo leaves. Their plumage is rendered in exquisite detail, showcasing the elegance and decorative richness characteristic of Suiun’s Southern School style. Suiun, a prominent Nanga painter from Gunma Prefecture, was known for his refined brushwork and leadership in traditional painting circles. This scroll is accompanied by an appraised box bearing the inscription of his disciple Suidō (翠堂), reflecting its careful preservation and lineage within the artist’s circle.
