Kobayashi Issa was a Japanese poet and lay Buddhist priest of the Jodo Shinshu. He is regarded as one of the four haiku masters in Japan, along with Basho, Buson, and Shiki - "the Great Four."

This kakejiku features a haiku by Kobayashi Issa (1763–1828), one of Japan’s “Great Four” haiku masters, brushed in a flowing hand that preserves the quiet immediacy of his verse: “Yuki chiruya waki sutete aru yu no keburi” — Amidst the falling snow, the hot spring water is being poured away without a second thought. The poem captures a fleeting winter moment, where drifting snow and rising steam meet in a scene both ordinary and quietly moving, a glimpse of daily life seen through Issa’s gentle, compassionate eye. The calligraphy carries a natural, unforced rhythm, allowing the haiku’s stillness and warmth to settle into the space without embellishment. The signature “Issa” (一茶) affirms the poet’s hand.
