山内多門 Yamauchi Tamon (1878-1932)
Born in Miyazaki Prefecture, he studied under Nakahara Nankei of the Kano school in his hometown at the age of 16. 1899, he moved to Tokyo, where he was introduced to Kawai Gyokudo and given the pseudonym Toshu. The following year, in 1900, he studied under Hashimoto Gaho. At this time, he learned a lot from Sesshu's vast and magnificent landscape paintings, rather than the traditional Kano school style with its thick and thin lines and strong keikaku (angular lines). In 1916, after suffering from typhus but surviving the illness, he joined Nakajima Kanshu to deepen his Zen and became more endogenous. He was no longer under the influence of Sesshu, but was drawn to the spare and emotional style of Yosa Buson.
