岡田半江 Okada Hanko (1782-1846)
Late Edo period Nanga painter. Son of 岡田米山人 Okada Beisanjin (1744-1820). Born in Osaka. He studied painting under his father and, like his father, served in the Osaka warehouse of the Tsu domain. Later moved to Kyoto, where he lived a life of painting and calligraphy. Interacted with writers and artists such as 頼山陽 Rai Sanyo (1781-1832) and 田能村竹田 Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835). Unlike his father, his painting style is characterized by its beauty and delicacy, and many of his works have a gentle and ample atmosphere. He excelled in Sansui landscape painting. At the time, he was a representative of Osaka literati painting.
with signature 'Hanko' 半江 and seal 'Ginko Senkan' 吟香仙館
The sense of a moment briefly suspended settles into the scene, the magpie’s outstretched wings, the drifting willow, and the early peach blossoms suggesting a seasonal interval that feels both fleeting and quietly expansive, a sensibility that aligns with the gentle, ample atmosphere characteristic of Okada Hanko’s nanga style; Hanko (1782–1846), son of Okada Beisanjin and active in Osaka and later Kyoto, studied under his father, interacted with figures such as Rai Sanyo and Tanomura Chikuden, and became known for literati paintings marked by delicacy and refinement, and this scroll bears the signature ‘Hanko’ with the seal ‘Ginko Senkan,’ while the piece is accompanied by its box, allowing the interplay of bird, water, and early spring branches to settle into a calm, enduring presence.
