This elegant hanging scroll by Hirai Baisen (1889–1969) captures the serene beauty of Kyoto’s eastern hills in springtime. The composition features a red pagoda nestled among lush foliage, with misty mountains rising in the background — a tranquil scene rendered in soft, harmonious tones. The title inscribed on the box, “Tōzan Shunshoku” (東山春色), translates to “Spring Colors of the Eastern Hills”, referring to the Higashiyama district of Kyoto. This area, rich in temples, gardens, and cultural heritage, has long inspired artists and poets as a symbol of seasonal renewal and spiritual calm. Hirai Baisen, active in the Taishō and Shōwa periods, was known for his lyrical landscapes and refined brushwork. His paintings often reflect a deep sensitivity to nature’s rhythms and a classical Japanese aesthetic rooted in harmony and restraint. The scroll is housed in its original double tomobako (wooden storage box) — an inner and outer box set — which adds significant value and provenance, indicating careful preservation and formal presentation. A superb example of modern Japanese landscape painting, ideal for collectors of Kyoto-themed works and seasonal compositions.
