In Zen, it expresses 和 wa (harmony or peace). It has no beginning and end, you may judge as you like, it can be sometimes seen as moon. Enso is a circle that is hand drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create.
天然 Tennen

戸上明道 Togami Meido (b1935), Gyokuryu-ji Chief priest of Daitoku-ji
with signature 'Zen Daitoku Meido' 前大徳 明道 and seal 'Meido' 明道 'Soken' 宗賢
This Zen calligraphy by Togami Meidō (b.1935), chief priest of Gyokuryū‑ji of the Daitoku‑ji school, presents an enso encircling the characters 天然 with a calm, unforced clarity. The single sweeping stroke of the circle holds a soft irregularity that reveals the moment of its creation—neither corrected nor restrained—while the two characters inside sit with a natural ease, expressing the Zen teaching of “as you are.” Meidō’s brush moves with a steady rhythm: the enso opens slightly at one point, allowing breath and spaciousness, while the characters within carry a grounded simplicity that feels both intimate and direct. His signature Zen Daitoku Meidō and accompanying seals balance the composition without distracting from the central gesture. The warm-toned mounting frames the work in a way that enhances its quiet presence, allowing the viewer to feel the interplay between spontaneity and clarity that defines Meidō’s mature style. Complete with its box, the scroll embodies a moment of unselfconscious expression—an enso drawn in a single breath, holding the reminder to accept things, and oneself, exactly as they are.
