This charming Japanese hanging scroll features a squirrel perched on an oak branch, surrounded by acorns and autumn foliage. Painted by Asai Kanpa (1897–1985), a distinguished Nihonga artist known for his refined flower-and-bird compositions, the work captures the seasonal beauty and symbolic warmth of autumn. In Japanese and East Asian symbolism, squirrels represent diligence, preparation, and domestic harmony, while acorns signify growth, prosperity, and the promise of future abundance. The pairing evokes a sense of natural balance and poetic tranquility, making it ideal for seasonal display or interior decoration. Kanpa’s brushwork combines realistic detail with lyrical composition, reflecting his training under Araki Kampō and his exposure to Indian mural traditions. His works were regularly exhibited at the Teiten and Bunten exhibitions, earning acclaim for their elegance and emotional depth.
