A Japanese painter from the Meiji period. He studied under Mori Kaikoku at the age of 18. He learned ink painting and traveled around Kyoto, Osaka, and Nagasaki, honing his skills.

Bringing together delicately observed flora and lively avian presence, this hanging scroll by Kimoto Kitsusu (1828–1888) presents a graceful scene of mountain birds resting among flowering branches. Kitsusu’s brushwork—shaped by his early study under Mori Kaikoku and refined through years of travel across Kyoto, Osaka, and Nagasaki—combines crisp outlines with soft tonal transitions, giving the blossoms a luminous freshness and the birds a poised, alert character.
