with signature and seal 'Hanrei' 半嶺
A quiet winter scene unfolds in this elegant hanging scroll by Hayashi Hanrei (active 1890–1940), portraying the sacred landscape of Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima gently covered in snow. The iconic torii gate stands calmly within the composition, surrounded by softly rendered trees, buildings, and distant mountains, all unified by a delicate veil of white. Hanrei, who studied under Satomi Unrei and was particularly known for his depictions of Miyajima, expresses not only the recognizable scenery but also its serene and spiritual atmosphere through restrained brushwork and subtle tonal gradation. The signature and seal “Hanrei” (半嶺) confirm the work. Created in the early 20th century, during the transition from the Meiji to early Shōwa period, the painting reflects a refined balance between traditional Japanese aesthetics and a gentle modern sensitivity. The scroll is accompanied by its original wooden storage box (tomobako), preserving its authenticity as a complete set. When displayed, the calm presence of this snow-covered shrine scene gradually brings a sense of quiet balance to the surrounding space, where its soft tones and peaceful composition can be appreciated over time, naturally enhancing the atmosphere of daily life.
