森徹山 Mori Tetsuzan (1775-1841)
Painter of the Mori and Shijo schools active in Osaka in the late Edo period. Son of Mori Shuho 森周峰. Learned Kano school from his father Shuho. He was adopted by his uncle Mori Sosen 森狙仙 and succeeded to the Mori school. He was especially good at animal paintings, and skillfully painted not only monkeys like Sosen, but also animals that are not often depicted. He became a pupil of Maruyama Okyo in his later years. One of the ten philosophies of the Okyo school.

Suspended in a moment of lively tension, this kakejiku depicts a monkey climbing a grapevine, its body twisting with natural agility as it reaches upward along the curling tendrils. The artist’s confident brushwork captures both the softness of the fur and the elasticity of the vine, creating a dynamic interplay between weight and movement. Subtle ink gradations give depth to the figure, while the surrounding negative space heightens the sense of vertical ascent. The signature “Tetsuzan” (徹山) and the seals “Tetsuzan” (徹山) and “Morizane” (守真) appear on the scroll, affirming its connection to the painter’s distinctive handling of animal subjects. The piece is accompanied by a preservation box, consistent with traditional storage practices for Edo‑period hanging scrolls.
