Thirteen Buddhas 十三仏 :
The Thirteen Buddhas are thirteen precious Buddhas who are the most familiar to us among the many Buddhas and have been worshipped since ancient times. The thirteen Buddhas are arranged with their own vows and virtues so that they can guide the spirits they care for to Paradise through their own outstanding merits. They are also the Buddhas for ancestral offerings and are always worshipped as the principal object of worship on the occasion of annual anniversaries.

The figures of the Thirteen Buddhas are arranged in a vertical progression that gives the scene a quiet sense of ritual time, each deity rendered with distinct robes, halos, and attributes that mark their individual roles while still forming a continuous ascent through the clouds; this measured layering suits Ikedo Seiho’s approach, in which clarity of form and devotional purpose are kept in balance, and the scroll bears the signature and seal ‘Seiho,’ while the piece is accompanied by its original box (Tomobako), and once placed in a living space the steady alignment of the thirteen figures tends to create a calm focal point, becoming a presence that the eye returns to naturally as the details of each Buddha reveal themselves gradually over repeated viewings.
