池田桂仙 Ikeda Keisen (1863-1931)
Japanese painter of the Meiji and early Showa periods. Born in Mie Prefecture. His father was Ikeda Unsho. Studied poetry and painting under Tani Tetsuomi and Ema Tenko in Kyoto. Won many prizes at the Bunten Exhibition. He is called the "Three Great Elders of the Southern Painting School in Kyoto" with Tajika Chikuson and Yamada Kaido.

Set against a warm, understated mounting, this kakejiku depicts a red‑robed Bodhidharma seated beside a blossoming plum branch, the vivid vermilion of the garment creating a striking contrast with the quiet ink tones of the surrounding elements. The composition balances solidity and openness: Daruma’s compact, grounded form anchors the lower portion of the scroll, while the delicate blossoms introduce a sense of seasonal clarity and renewal. Subtle shading and controlled brushwork give the figure a contemplative presence, enhanced by the accompanying inscription that frames the scene with a poetic, auspicious tone. The scroll bears the signature “Keisen itsushi” (桂仙逸士) and the seals “Tashō no in” (田昌之印) and “Kobi” (公美), affirming its connection to the painter’s refined and expressive style.
