This elegant hanging scroll depicts a tranquil pastoral scene by Ikai Shokoku (1881–1939), a Kyoto-born painter associated with the Shijō school, known for his refined brushwork and quiet narrative sensibility. The composition shows a cowherd seated on the ground, gently playing a flute, while a reclining cow looms calmly behind him, its large form rendered with expressive yet restrained ink washes. The generous use of empty space enhances the contemplative atmosphere, allowing the viewer to feel the stillness and harmony between man, animal, and nature.
