田能村竹田 Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835)
Nanga painter of the late Edo period, representative of the literati painting circles of the late Edo period. He lived a free literary life while visiting Nagasaki, Osaka, and Kyoto. While studying Chinese poetry from a young age, he also learned painting from a painter from his hometown, and for a time studied under 谷文晁 Tani Buncho (1763-1840) in Edo. He established his own style of painting with delicate brushstrokes, faithful to the style of Nanga (Southern-style painting) and with a high degree of dignity. However, it was the southern painters in Osaka and Kyoto, such as 頼山陽 Rai Sanyo (1780-1832), 岡田米山人 Okada Beisanjin (1744-1820), 浦上玉堂 Uragami Gyokudo (1745-1820), and 青木木米 Aoki Mokubei (1767-1833), who suggested to him the way to become a great literati painter. And he learned a lot from 米山人 Beisanjin in particular. Among his pupils were 高橋草坪 Takahashi Sohei (1804-1835), 帆足杏雨 Hoashi Kyou (1810-1884), and 田能村直入 Tanomura Chokunyu (1814-1907).

with signature 'Chikuden Rojin' 竹田老人 and seal 'Chikuden' 竹田

This antique Japanese hanging scroll by Tanomura Chikuden (1777–1835), signed Chikuden Rōjin (竹田老人) and sealed Chikuden (竹田), presents a tranquil valley scene with bamboo groves, winding paths, and a rustic village nestled among the hills. Executed in delicate brushwork and soft ink tones, the composition reflects Chikuden’s refined Nanga style—imbued with poetic restraint and literati dignity. The scroll is accompanied by an appraised box attributed to Tanomura Shōchiku (田能村小竹, 1880–1945), Chikuden’s great-grandchild, adding historical depth and familial provenance to the piece. This work exemplifies the quiet lyricism and scholarly spirit that defined Chikuden’s contribution to late Edo-period literati painting
