維明周奎 Imei Shukei (1731-1808
A monk of the Rinzai sect Shōkoku-ji school and a painter active during the mid-to-late Edo period. Born in Takahama, Wakasa Province, he entered Shōkoku-ji temple in Kyoto at a young age and served as its 115th head priest. He studied painting under Ito Jakuchu, leaving behind outstanding works particularly in plum blossom paintings and figure paintings.

Quietly illuminated by a pale moon, this hanging scroll by Imei Shukei (1731–1808) presents a refined ink depiction of plum blossoms rising against the night sky. Shukei, a Rinzai‑sect monk of the Shōkoku‑ji lineage and a pupil of Ito Jakuchu, channels both spiritual clarity and painterly discipline into the delicate interplay of branches, blossoms, and atmospheric light. The restrained brushwork allows the moon to emerge softly from the surrounding ink wash, while the plum—one of Shukei’s most celebrated subjects—appears with a balance of elegance and vitality. Signed “Imei” and sealed with “Shukei no in” and “Imei,” the work reflects the contemplative sensibility of a monk‑painter whose mastery bridged religious practice and artistic expression.
